Industrial art in the Ruhr area
Colliery towers, steelworks, coking plants, blast furnaces and smoking chimneys, heavy industry shaped the image of the Ruhr area between Duisburg and Dortmund in the west of Germany for over a hundred years. Many of these landmarks have now disappeared as part of the ongoing structural change, so the last colliery was closed in 2020.
Even today, there are still some of these industrial buildings to see, whether active or as monuments.
Based on the minimalist photos of Bernd and Hilla Becher, I present industrial architecture in a very reduced way. Due to the silhouette-like reduction, the shapes and lines of the buildings are reduced to the essentials. They show for me a fascinating aesthetic that you wouldn't expect from these monuments of heavy industry.
